Finding God in the Ordinary: Thankful for Today “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, KJV) Sometimes I think I am waiting for something extraordinary before I stop and thank God. It is easy to recognize His goodness when a prayer is answered, a burden is lifted, healing comes, or something we have hoped for finally happens. Those are wonderful moments, and we should thank God for them. But what about the days when nothing extraordinary happens? What about a morning when we wake up, get dressed, make breakfast, go to work, care for the people around us, and eventually go back to bed? We might call that an ordinary day. But perhaps no day lived with God is truly ordinary. Each morning we wake with breath in our lungs is another day God has allowed us to live. A meal can remind us of His provision. The people we love are a gift. Time to pray reminds us that we have access to our heavenly Father, and when we open His Word, we hold something more precious than anything this world can give us. Through all these everyday moments, God is still with us. Perhaps we sometimes miss His goodness because we look for Him only in the spectacular. We look for the miracle and overlook the mercy. We wait for a great answer to prayer and forget the many ways God has already provided. We ask for tomorrow’s provision while overlooking today’s daily bread. Paul’s words remind us to give thanks in every circumstance. Scripture does not say that everything we experience will be pleasant. There will be difficult days, tears, disappointments, unanswered questions, loneliness, sickness, and heartache. Yet even on those days, God has not ceased to be God. His character has not changed, His promises remain, and His presence has not disappeared. Christian thankfulness is deeper than being grateful only when life is going well. We can give thanks in every circumstance because God’s goodness does not depend on how our day is going. Some days bring extraordinary blessings. Others seem completely ordinary, and some are days we would rather not have to walk through. In every one of them, God remains faithful. So instead of asking, “Did anything special happen today?” perhaps we can ask, “Where did I see the faithfulness of God today?” Maybe it was the warmth of sunlight through a window, the voice of someone you love, the strength to finish something difficult, a Scripture that spoke to your heart, or a moment of peace while a problem remained unresolved. Or perhaps the greatest reason for gratitude is simply this: God was with you. The greatest treasure of an ordinary day is not always something God places in our hands. It is the privilege of walking through that day with Him. Finding God in the ordinary does not mean He suddenly appeared there. It means realizing He was there all along. When our eyes begin to recognize His goodness, an ordinary day can look different. The morning becomes a gift, a meal becomes a reminder of provision, a conversation becomes a blessing, and a quiet moment becomes an opportunity for fellowship with God. Even an ordinary day lived with Him is touched by grace. So, before this day passes, pause for a moment and look around. What have you received from God’s hand that you might have overlooked because it seemed ordinary? Then look beyond the gifts to the Giver. Perhaps one of the greatest things we can thank God for today is simply this: “Lord, thank You for being with me in the ordinary.” Reflection: • What ordinary blessing from God have I been taking for granted? • Am I so focused on what I am waiting for God to do that I am missing what He is doing today? • Where have I seen God’s faithfulness in the ordinary moments of my life? • If my circumstances did not change today, where might I still find God’s presence, care, or strength? Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have overlooked Your goodness because I was waiting for something extraordinary. Open my eyes to see Your faithfulness in the ordinary moments of my life. Thank You for today, for the breath You have given me, for Your provision, for Your Word, for Your mercy, and most of all, for Your presence. Teach me not only to thank You for the things You give me, but to treasure You above every gift. When life is joyful, help me remember You. When life is difficult, help me trust You. When life seems ordinary, help me recognize that even an ordinary day lived with You is touched by grace. Give me a thankful heart that can say in every circumstance, “Thank You, Lord. You have been faithful, and You are with me.” I pray all of this in the perfect and powerful name of my precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
