So here it is - epic rock, built from zero. And doing it this way forced us to look closely at one thing the march version never had to answer. Listen to where the music stops. The second thing research made clear is that nobody knows when this song was written. "Around 1930" appears everywhere and has never been substantiated. The only hard fact is a printing: Carl Louis Oertel, in the village of Großburgwedel northeast of Hanover, published it in 1938. Herms Niel himself gave an origin story — he told the Viennese paper Das Kleine Volksblatt that the melody came to him in the summer of 1938, during a walk that turned into a run after his dog stepped into a wasp nest. It is a good story. It is also the only source for it, it was told to a newspaper under the regime, and it quietly contradicts every earlier date anyone has proposed. The third thing is less charming. Erika was not a flash of inspiration. It was one item in a product line. Niel wrote girl-name marching songs by the batch: "Rosemarie." "Annemarie." He was born Ferdinand Friedrich Hermann Nielebock, in a village called Nielebock - the stage name was the place. Trombone and oboe in the Prussian Guards from 1906, regimental bandmaster in the First World War, then eight years as an administrative clerk before music took him back. He joined the party in 1933, membership 2,171,788, became an SA troop leader, then music director of every Reich Labour Service band, which put him in front of the massed bands at the Nuremberg rallies. In 1941 he wrote a march for the Waffen-SS. The flower song and that march came from the same hand.
