Word stress is one syllable in a word. Sentence stress is which WORDS get the weight in a sentence, and it's the reason native speakers sound fast and you can't always catch it. The big idea: English splits into CONTENT words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, the ones that carry the meaning) and GRAMMAR words (pronouns, prepositions, articles). The content words set the tempo. The grammar words get squashed in between. That's the "music" of English. Then the clever bit: stress a different word and you change the meaning of the whole sentence. Same words, new message. There's a section on correcting someone using stress alone. If people don't understand you easily, stress and intonation are usually the reason, not grammar. Test at the end, and some poems to practise with. I'm James, an English teacher from the UK. Modern RP accent. 🔎 Also covers: English pronunciation, native English speaker, English as a second or foreign language, advanced English, English rhythm, intonation in English, British accent, English poems. ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction 00:35 Word Stress vs Sentence Stress 00:59 Word Stress 01:42 Sentence Stress 02:25 Content Words and Grammar Words 05:12 1 2 3 4 09:18 Emphasis using stress 14:45 Correcting someone using Stress 16:38 TEST TIME 20:00 Advice (Poems) 🎓 LEARN WITH ME (B1 and above) Native Phrase Lab: 1,000 real phrases, 52 topics, 19 languages, one payment, no subscription 👉 https://easyenglishwithjames.com/phra...
