France is witnessing its largest student uprising since May 1968, driven by mounting anger over deteriorating educational conditions, austerity measures, and police repression. What began with high school blockades has spread to universities and drawn wider layers of French society into confrontation with the government. To break this all down to better understand this moment, I am joined by Henry Wallis, an activist and socialist writer based in Paris. We discuss the current uprising and how to understand the radical left political movement that has played a prominent role in this uprising, namely La France Insoumise.

Wallis describes Jean-Luc Mélenchon, his background, ideology and how his LFI movement broke with the traditional parties of the French left by developing a strategy centered on bringing workers, young people, racialized communities, and other excluded constituencies into a common political bloc. Wallis describes LFI’s relationship to social movements, elections, republicanism, class politics, political leadership, and the institutions of the Fifth Republic. He also addresses the tensions within Mélenchon’s strategy, including the relationship between charismatic leadership and mass organization, electoral campaigning and popular mobilization, and national political traditions and socialist internationalism.
