Obscure composition! Maybe the one and only Nocturne for 3 hands ever composed, and indeed one of the very few pieces for 3 hands.
Maria Szymanowska(1789-1831) was a polish pianist and composer who gave her first concerts 1810 in Warsaw and Paris. In this year she also married a landlord who didn't support her in composing and didn't accept it. Ten years later she divorced and gave concerts only to friends and visitors. She intensified her composing then. She was one of the first female musicians to be able to live from her work as pianist. Between 1823-1827 she toured: Germany, England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Russia. In weimar she actually played for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who said she was an "enchanting goddess of music". Probably she was the first pianist at all to play the pieces without score at concerts. People consider Liszt as the first pianist doing that usually...
Her first composition dates back to as early as 1803 and she wrote over 100 pieces. She is seen as important precursor to Chopin. Actually her teacher, Jozef Elsner, was also Chopins later teacher. German wikipedia now says: It is unknown (!) if she was an important figure in introducing Nocturnes in Poland. Her nocturnes were probably not the first at all... John Field has Nocturnes from 1812, and Szymanowska composed a lot after 1820. But her 2 Nocturnes are good examples of the transition from the classical period to romantic period, I think. Often i hear schubert in her motives and figurations. The searching harmonic progressions which may sound weird to our ears are also an example of the attempt of a new approach to modulate in a piece. (Well even Mozart in his Fantasies already does that, but in the early romantic period this was quite common, modulations to far away harmonies).
Sadly, the score was so bad to read and has an incredible amount of mistakes. When I played the third hand I literally held my Tablet near to my face because I couldn't read a thing (must look stupid). i guess most of the notes should be fine. Her other nocturne already has an existing score video by medtnaculus but... maybe I'll still play it because why not
