The brain gave up almost none of its secrets to careful study. Nearly everything we know about which region does what was learned when something went badly wrong for someone.
This long-form history of science documentary follows those cases: the Vermont railway foreman Phineas Gage in 1848, the Paris patient known as Tan whose loss of speech led Paul Broca to localise language in 1861, Carl Wernicke's later work on comprehension, and the patient whose surgery in 1953 revealed how memories are formed and where. It looks at how much of neuroscience rests on a small number of individuals, and what we owe them.
Calm narration, steady pacing, no sudden volume changes. Made for quiet nighttime listening and for falling asleep to.
