Scientists Reveal The Real Genetic Origin Of Filipinos — It's Not What You Think

For centuries, the origins of the Filipino people have been described through migration traditions, Austronesian history, archaeology, and the remarkable diversity of the Philippine islands. But modern genetics is revealing that Filipino ancestry is much more complicated than one simple migration story. In this documentary, we explore what Filipino DNA reveals about the ancient populations who shaped the Philippines, how Austronesian migrations transformed Island Southeast Asia, and why different Filipino ethnolinguistic groups preserve different genetic connections. Research examining complete mitochondrial genomes from 14 Filipino ethnolinguistic groups found substantial genetic diversity and different ancient and recent affinities across the Asia-Pacific region. The results did not support a simple division between “Negrito” and “non-Negrito” populations, showing instead a much more complicated population history. Genome-wide research across Island Southeast Asia has also found that Austronesian-speaking populations share ancestry connected to populations of Taiwan, alongside ancestry inherited from indigenous populations already living farther south. So where did Filipinos really come from? Was there one founding population? Or did the people of the Philippines emerge from multiple ancient migrations, local populations, and centuries of genetic interaction across the islands?
