Your brain runs an evolutionary threat simulator every night. It is older than you, older than language, older than agriculture. It does not know what year it is. It does not know your phone exists. It is still looking for the leopard. In 2000, Finnish cognitive scientist Antti Revonsuo published "The Reinterpretation of Dreams" in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, arguing that dreams aren't personal psychological content - they're inherited threat-rehearsal software. In 2017, anthropologist David Samson confirmed something close to this in the Hadza of Tanzania: across 20 nights of monitoring, the entire camp was simultaneously asleep for a total of 18 minutes. Total. The rest of the time someone was awake, watching the dark. This is the story of what your dreams actually are. Why you still fall in them. Why your teeth keep falling out. Why a man in a cave 30,000 years ago dreamed about exactly the same things you do. Research referenced: — Revonsuo, A. (2000). The reinterpretation of dreams.
