Jaroslav Mysiak — Think Solution-Oriented: Beyond Limits

The UN Global Sustainable Solutions Winter School is a collaboration between the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s School of Public Policy and its School of Earth & Sustainability, University of Massachusetts Boston’s School for the Environment, McMaster University, PEDRR, and some institutes of the United Nations University (UNU-CRIS, UNU-EHS, & UNU-MERIT). This is the Winter School’s fifth non-consecutive year in operation. In this lecture, Dr. Mysiak will discuss why climate change assessment should always focus on enabling change. Climate risk assessments are often viewed as tools for identifying vulnerabilities and quantifying risks, but they must provide more than that. In his lecture, the audience will explore how shifting the focus from understanding risks to actively enabling transformative change and adopting a solution-oriented mindset can uncover opportunities, inspire innovation, and drive action. He will discuss how climate risk assessments can empower communities, institutions, and decision-makers to explore out-of-the-box solutions, employing nature-based approaches within the insurance and financial investment domains. Lecturer Bio: Dr Jaroslav Mysiak is the director of the research division ‘Risk assessment and adaptation strategies ’and an external teacher at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He holds a PhD from the University of Göttingen and MSc. from the Technical University Zvolen. Jaroslav’s research focuses on risk assessment and governance, including behavioural responses to risks and risk-reduction measures, risk perception and transformational social change, environmental economics, sustainable finance, climate adaptation and services. Previously he contributed to the sustainable taxonomy as a member of the expert network established by the Technical Expert Group on sustainable finance and is a member of the EU Disaster Loss Data System working group.
