Immediate Actions
Shout "Man Overboard!" to alert the crew.
Throw Lifebuoy or Marker: Toss a lifebuoy or a floating marker to the MOB. This helps track their position.
Sound the Alarm: Activate the MOB alarm to notify the crew.
Post a Lookout: Assign a crew member to maintain constant visual contact with the MOB.
Engage MOB Button: If available, press the MOB button on the GPS or ECDIS to mark the location.
Reduce Speed: Stop or reduce engine power to minimize drift and prevent propeller injuries.
Recovery Maneuvers
1. Williamson Turn:
Use: When the MOB location is uncertain or visibility is poor.
Steps:
Turn hard towards the side the MOB fell.
Continue turning until the ship’s heading is 60°-70° off course.
Shift rudder to the opposite side to return to the reciprocal course.
Steady the ship to retrace its path and recover the MOB.
2. Scharnow Turn:
Use: When the MOB’s position is known, and the ship has traveled far from the point of fall.
Steps:
Turn hard over to either side to complete a 240° turn.
Shift the rudder to the opposite side to head back along the reciprocal course.
Approach the MOB for recovery.
3. Single Round Turn:
Use: When the MOB is visible and nearby.
Steps:
Turn hard over towards the MOB.
Complete a full circle to approach the MOB from the downwind side.
Stop engines and recover the MOB.
Additional Considerations
Environment: Account for wind, waves, and currents when maneuvering.
Safety First: Avoid bringing the ship too close to prevent injury from the hull or propeller.
Communication: Alert nearby vessels to assist if needed.
Crew Coordination: Ensure recovery equipment (rescue boats, davits, lifelines) is ready.
