It’s been nearly nine years since I first filmed these, and I’ve been meaning to return for a retake for quite some time. These custom Schindler elevators, at the Farnsworth Street end of the museum, were added in a major renovation in the 2000s; like the museum’s post-renovation architecture, their cabs are modern, yet classy, with exquisite oil-rubbed brass panels and cabs, stone floors, and unique lighted ceilings. They feature EPCO Classic buttons and custom lanterns, and an interesting generic TTS voice I don’t think I’ve heard anywhere else.
The left car is larger, and claims a capacity of 12,000 pounds (similar to the freight car here), though I doubt that’s true, despite the heavy-duty construction of these two lifts. They’re still in amazing condition, and run very smoothly all these years later. There’s a second pair of elevators at the opposite end of the museum which are nearly identical to these, and the freight has a similar design too.
