For more than 60 million years, South America existed almost completely isolated from the rest of the world. With no land bridge connecting it to North America and thousands of kilometers of ocean separating it from other continents, evolution took a completely different path. This documentary explores the lost world of prehistoric South America — a continent filled with animals found nowhere else on Earth. Discover the bizarre creatures that evolved in isolation, including: Terror birds standing up to three meters tall Thylacosmilus, the saber-toothed marsupial Megatherium, the giant ground sloth Glyptodonts covered in massive biological armor Toxodon and Macrauchenia Strange native herbivores with no living equivalents Ancient monkeys and rodents that may have crossed the Atlantic on floating vegetation For millions of years, South America was essentially a giant evolutionary laboratory. But around three million years ago, everything changed. The Isthmus of Panama formed, connecting North and South America and triggering the Great American Biotic Interchange. Cats, dogs, bears, horses, deer, camelids and other northern animals moved south, while ground sloths, armadillos, glyptodonts, terror birds and other South American animals moved north. The result transformed the wildlife of both continents — but South America suffered the greatest losses. Many of its unique native animals disappeared forever. This is the story of how geography created one of the strangest ecosystems in Earth’s history — and how a narrow strip of land changed evolution, ocean currents, climate, and life across an entire hemisphere.
