In April 2025, the US began charging a 25% tariff on every car built outside the country. Toyota's CFO said the company would not raise its American prices to cover it. Almost nobody noticed.
On May 8 this year, the bill came in. ¥1.38 trillion — about $9.3 billion — off the bottom line. North America closed the year at an operating margin of -1.4%. Toyota's first loss on this continent since 2009.
It wasn't because Americans stopped buying. Toyota finished the first half of 2026 as the number one automaker in the United States at 1,073,678 vehicles, ahead of Ford and Chevrolet, with a record RAV4 it still can't build fast enough. Toyota was winning the country and bleeding while it did it. On purpose.
Over the same twelve months, Ford, GM and Stellantis wrote off a combined $52.1 billion on electric vehicles. And the average new car in America reached $49,855.
Meanwhile Toyota sells a lidar-equipped electric SUV in China for around $15,000. The cheapest new Toyota in America is a $23,125 Corolla.
This is the story of why Toyota absorbed a nine-billion-dollar loss instead of raising prices, what Detroit's $52 billion actually bought, why Toyota killed the gasoline RAV4 at the peak of its history, the $15,000 Toyota you can't buy here and the real reason it can't come, and the 2028 battery timeline just confirmed by the last company on earth with any reason to confirm it.

Toyota ate $9.3 billion rather than pass the tariff to American buyers. Right call, or should they have passed it through so buyers could see the real cost of the policy? Comments below.
