The Massacre That Never Happened—and the City That Still Vanished

Was Mohenjo-daro, the jewel of the Indus Valley Civilization in Pakistan, destroyed in a final massacre? This documentary follows the excavation evidence and shows why the famous "massacre" never happened. We retrace the story from Mortimer Wheeler’s invasion narrative to George F. Dales’s 1964 review, then into modern bioarchaeology, taphonomy, and geo-environmental research. No single battlefield, no citywide burn layer, no consistent perimortem trauma—and no proof that the ~37 individuals died together. From Room 74 and Deadman’s Lane to the Great Bath and Citadel Mound, we compare early field notes with later science to separate myth from material culture. If not a massacre, why did the city vanish? We explore flooding and waterlogging, salinization, shifting Indus channels (river avulsion), disease, changing trade and governance, and the long urban decline that reshaped the Harappan world.
