To completely seal out the freezing wind, the builder must shatter a thick layer of ice with a pickaxe to harvest vital groundwater. Mixing this freezing water with clay-rich earth, he creates a thick mud mortar. By meticulously hand-packing this wet clay deep into the crevices of the unhewn rocks, he knits the earth and stone into a solid, hermetically sealed barrier against the brutal winter air. With the structural envelope sealed, a warm hearth fire transforms the damp cave into a thermal sanctuary.
