Two eyewitnesses, one war, opposite sides. We read the Crusades in pairs: a Frankish chronicle passage (August C. Krey, The First Crusade: The Accounts of Eye-Witnesses and Participants, 1921) next to the memoirs of the Syrian knight Usama ibn Munqidh (tr. Philip K. Hitti, 1929). Pairs cover courage, medicine, faith and daily life, plus two extras: the Frankish axe doctor and the Holy Lance of Antioch. Where we add a comparison of our own, such as medicine around 1100 including Sushruta (Bhishagratna tr., 1907), it is labelled on screen as a hosts' aside. The show takes no side.
Hosts: Jay, Meera, Soons.
Art: US public-domain medieval works (Morgan Bible c.1250; al-Wasiti, Maqamat 1237; Godefroi 1099 miniature; Avicenna's Canon; al-Zahrawi; others listed in art/raw/licenses.json) and public-domain book scans from archive.org.
