This APO Productivity Talk presentation outlines the likely economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Insights into the economic effects and macroeconomic impacts of COVID-19 in general and the implications for productivity in the Asia-Pacific region in particular are discussed. As COVID-19 continues to spread around the world, governments have turned to different measures to disrupt the contagion as it has severed the flow of goods and people, stalled economies, and appears to be creating a global recession. Reports show that the economic contagion is now spreading as fast as the disease itself. Professor Hak Kil Pyo, who is currently Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Economics and Visiting Scholar at the Asia Center, Seoul National University, provides a snapshot of the depth of the crisis and the structural economic damage it could cause at the global, regional, and national levels. Proposals on actions to address the negative impacts of COVID-19 on the economy and productivity, including long-term policies and strategies, are highlighted.
