Bougainville voted overwhelmingly for independence from Papua New Guinea, yet it remains part of the country today. This video explains why that vote did not automatically create a new nation. It traces the island's colonial border history, the Panguna copper and gold mine, the devastating conflict of the 1990s, the 2001 peace agreement, and the 2019 referendum. It then follows the recent negotiations, the tabling of the result in Papua New Guinea's Parliament, and Bougainville's preparations for self-government. The central idea is that sovereignty comes with a price. With most of its budget funded from outside, Bougainville may need to reopen the very mine that helped spark its independence struggle in order to afford a future state. This video is for general information and educational purposes only. It is not financial, legal, or investment advice. Facts and figures are based on the sources available at the time of production and may change.
