Does every small company need an ERP or CRM before it can use AI agents?
This Oryh development note argues for choosing tools around actual work, risk, and accountability. A shared spreadsheet with a capable agent may be enough for some businesses. Financial exposure, concurrent edits, missing history, weak permissions, and duplicate execution can justify a stronger record system even when transaction volumes are modest.
Using an illustrative small-services-company example, it explores how agents can inspect project records and contracts, reconcile received payments, identify missing evidence, and distinguish overdue balances from amounts not yet due. A payment promise is not proof that money arrived, and decisions requiring a person remain with that person.
The point is not that spreadsheets are always safe or ERP is unnecessary. Evaluate edit history, access controls, transactional consistency, stable interfaces, and whether agents can read back their writes. An ERP label alone guarantees none of these.
Oryh follows the same principle: software records facts; compatible AI agents apply company-owned Skills and business rules. Start with a simpler record tool when it is adequate. Move to a stronger system when demonstrated needs justify it.
The services-company scenario is illustrative, not a customer incident or measured performance claim.
