NEXT23 Trade Exhibition: Meet the maker – Unique Driftwood Creations

From voluptuous, earthy ceramics and traditional-with-a-twist textiles to intricately patterned hand-woven cloth in seasonal colours, the latest in South African creativity and artisanal mastery is on show as part of NEXT23 at Decorex Cape Town, the country’s leading décor and design showcase, which runs at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 22 to 25 June 2023. An annual presentation of export-worthy designs, the NEXT Trade Exhibition is proudly presented by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI). Unique Driftwood Creations is owned and run by artist sculptor Boniface Chikwenhere. He creates unique one-off sculptures using driftwood, found wood and petrified wood. These 'green' sculptures reveal the beauty of nature's own handiwork which is unparalleled to none in their texture, character and form. Boniface believes that his work is to complete off what nature would have carved for decades or centuries through erosion and other weathering elements. Unique Driftwood Creations only uses materials that are sourced from nature's recycle bin, from the riverbanks of Zimbabwe, the deserts of Namibia, the shores of Lake Malawi and to the coastal areas in South Africa. They strongly believe in the three “R's” of sustainable conservation as their production involves Recycling, Reusing and thus Reducing carbon footprint. These amazing pieces are showcased both locally and abroad, and Boniface takes part in numerous local exhibitions and art festivals where he enjoys demonstrating and sharing his passion with patrons of these events. Apart from supplying a select number of galleries, boutique shops in game reserves and décor houses, Boniface also exports his pieces to private collectors all over the world. He is part of the South African Society of Artists (SASA) where he has won numerous accolades for his unique art form.
