The leaves are getting ready to fall. There are only a few months left in the year. And still, I don’t want to go home early. When a song I like comes on, I want to hear just one more. When it’s time to say goodbye to a friend, we somehow end up standing outside a convenience store for another ten minutes. And when the last train gets close, that’s when the day suddenly starts to feel too precious to waste. In summer, I thought there was plenty of time. The days were long. There was always next week, and next month. Everything felt like something I could do later. But once fall comes, I suddenly start seeing numbers. How many weekends are left this year. How many more times I’ll see this person before the year ends. How many nights are left when I can still stand outside in a T-shirt. Then even the smallest things start to feel a little urgent. I want to see someone one more time. Walk a little farther. Take a picture for no particular reason. Maybe that feeling in your chest doesn’t only come when something is beginning. Sometimes, when you slowly start to realize that something is going to end, you begin to live a little bigger. Trees in fall are like that too. When they’re busy growing, they’re all more or less the same green. Then, just when it’s almost time to fall, they suddenly bring out every color they have. It’s kind of funny. They have less time left, and somehow they become more vivid. I’d like to be a little like that before this year is over. Even if my battery is at 8%, I’ll let the song finish. Tomorrow can deal with tomorrow’s tiredness.
