EU and NATO reinforce each other: President von der Leyen meets NATO Secretary-General Rutte

On 2 September, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels. Ahead of their meeting, both presented press statements to journalists. In her statement, President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attempted Russian attack that took place at Leipzig/Halle Airport as a serious escalation on EU soil. She stressed Europe’s full solidarity with Germany and made clear that intimidation will not weaken support for Ukraine, but instead strengthen EU and NATO resolve. She also called for: 🛡️ Stronger protection of critical infrastructure. 🛡️ Faster joint responses. 🛡️ Tighter sanctions on Russia. 🛡️ Greater use of the Single Market to cut into Russia’s war chest. Finally, the President highlighted continued military and financial support for Ukraine, closer EU-NATO cooperation, and major new defence investments to strengthen Europe’s security and deterrence.
