I used to think so too, until I learned Cantonese. This video is a boxing match: Cantonese vs English, three rounds, to find out which is really the polite language. English wins round one on sheer word count: please, sorry, would you mind, a dozen words just to ask for a napkin. But Cantonese politeness is hidden: in the difference between 唔該 (m4 goi1) and 多謝 (do1 ze6), in the magic of final particles that turn one sentence into four, and in actions, like fighting over the bill after dinner. Then in round three I turn on my own people, because British politeness is often fake. "Interesting…" does not mean interesting. So which is real politeness, sounding nice or doing good?
