You Can Look Religious and Still Be Far From God | Isaiah 28–35

What if you can say the right things, attend church, know your Bible—and still have a heart that's far from God? That's exactly the warning Isaiah gives. The people of Judah weren't irreligious. They knew how to talk about God. They had their traditions. They looked spiritual. But God saw something everyone else couldn't: Their hearts. “These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.” Jesus would later quote those very words. And that's where this week's conversation through Isaiah 28–35 gets uncomfortable—in a good way. Because it's easy to look at ancient Israel and wonder how they could keep turning away from God. But then Isaiah starts sounding a lot like us. When trouble came, they ran to Egypt instead of God. We have our own “Egypts.” 💰 Money 🏛️ Government 👥 Other people 🧠 Our own intelligence 💪 Our ability to stay in control Your Egypt can be anything you instinctively run to instead of God. And God keeps saying: Come back to Me. These chapters eventually take us somewhere beautiful. From judgment... to a King. From blindness... to opened eyes. From wandering... to a highway home. From sorrow... to everlasting joy. Isaiah 35 says the redeemed will return with singing, “everlasting joy will crown their heads,” and sorrow and sighing will flee away. And the only reason any of us can walk that road is Jesus Christ.
