Orphaned as children, Thik-hông and her younger brother live under their uncle's roof. Her lonely destiny seems preordained from birth by the fateful lines of her palms, which traditionally hint at a lifelong destiny of solitude. When her brother tragically drowns while out fishing, Thik-hông resolves to change her fate. Relying on her embroidery talent and her bound feet, she marries into the wealthy Sin family. However, her husband dies young of illness. As covetous relatives eye the family fortune, her young son is sent away to Japan, leaving her with only her loyal maid for companionship. While Osmanthus Alley is a grand estate of comfort and affluence, it is also a fortress of high walls that imprisons morality, represses desire, and seals Thik-hông into a life of solitude. Adapted from HSIAO Li-hung's eponymous novel and directed by CHEN Kun-hou, the film uses a warm, humanistic lens to capture a tumultuous female epic through an individual’s lived experience. Rich in gender metaphors, it stands as a landmark nativist work of the Taiwan New Cinema. LU Hsiao-fen stars as Ti Hung, masterfully tracing her journey from an innocent, grief-stricken girl to a resilient widow, and finally to a serene elderly woman. LU delivers a nuanced portrayal of a woman struggling against, yet ultimately finding peace within, a traditional feudal society. The film’s theme song, with lyrics by WU Nien-jen and music by CHEN Yang, opens with the evocative lines: "Reflecting on the destiny of my life, it is like a kite with a broken string..." - perfectly capturing a life marked by isolation, yet defined by resilience.
