Bella Mir Lost on DWCS — It May Be the Best Thing for Her Career

Bella Mir entered Dana White’s Contender Series carrying more than the expectations of an undefeated prospect. She was carrying the Mir name, the expectations that come with being Frank Mir’s daughter, and a fast-moving path toward the UFC. Then she lost. I don’t think that means Bella Mir was exposed. I think this loss may eventually prove to be one of the most important moments of her career. Frank Mir said afterward that he believes he has taken his daughter as far as he can as her coach. I think recognizing that may be exactly what Bella needs. At only 23 years old, she already has wrestling, grappling, striking experience and access to virtually any MMA room she wants. What she needs now isn't another credential. She needs to make those individual skills work together seamlessly as MMA. My prescription: take a step back, build Team Bella Mir, get two or three developmental fights against legitimate opposition, and come back for another shot at the UFC when she's ready—not simply when the opportunity is available. Sometimes winning allows problems to stay hidden. Losing forces you to fix them. Bella Mir’s story isn’t over.
