Insular woodiness is why daisies and dandelions become 26-foot trees on islands. This film traces St Helena's 8-meter gumwood Commidendrum robustum, the Canary Islands' woody Sonchus and Socotra's cucumber bottle tree Dendrosicyos socotranus, and why 1,097 herbs turned woody across 375 islands. It revisits Darwin's light-competition idea, shows how frost-free, grazer-free islands let annuals keep wood, and why goats, rats and extinction — from the Saint Helena olive in 2003 to Juan Fernandez's Dendroseris — now threaten them.
