Most loneliness doesn't feel like loneliness. It feels like being fine. This is a map of all of it, seven levels deep, from the kind a phone can fix in seconds to the one nobody can fix, and why that last one turns out to be the one place nobody is alone. Entry two of an atlas, pinned on WHAT THE MIND IS. Pascal, Epictetus, Thoreau, Schopenhauer, Hume, Descartes, Hannah Arendt and Marcus Aurelius, with what the surveys found. Every quotation is read from a public-domain edition; work, section, translator and edition are below. Hannah Arendt is still in copyright, so the video says so and paraphrases instead. If any of this sits heavier than an idea right now, talk to a real person: a friend, a doctor, or in the U.S. call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. -- CHAPTERS -- 00:00 Most loneliness feels like being fine 00:55 The seven levels, and the two promises 01:15 Level one: bored (Pascal's room) 03:45 Level two: missing someone (Epictetus) 06:57 Level three: alone in a crowd (Thoreau) 10:33 Level four: the distance (Schopenhauer's porcupines) 13:48 Level five: unshared (Hume, Descartes) 17:05 Level six: deserted (Arendt) 20:34 Level seven: the last room (Pascal again) 23:18 The turn: the one rung everyone shares 25:30 The ending 26:09 The atlas -- SOURCES, every quotation -- Pascal, Pensees, fragments 139 and 211.
