In this lecture of the pipeline series (Pipeline 302), we break down the critical decision-making process for selecting the right pipeline material. Material selection is rarely just about initial CAPEX—it demands a full life-cycle cost analysis balancing upfront procurement against long-term maintenance, chemical inhibition, and operational limits. We evaluate 8 primary pipeline material options across mechanical strength, H2S/chloride resistance, pressure/temperature limits, constructability, and operational trade-offs: 1. Carbon Steel (CS): Readily available, high-strength grades (API 5L Grade B to X70), but requires active corrosion management, sour service qualification, coatings, and cathodic protection. 2. Carbon Steel with PE Liner: Eliminates corrosive fluid contact, but introduces temperature limits, permeation risk, annulus venting requirements, and frequent flanged joints. 3. Glass Reinforced Epoxy (GRE): Excellent corrosion and high H2S resistance, though constrained by diameter-pressure limits, UV exposure concerns, and buried installation needs. 4. Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipes (RTP / Flexible): Spoolable solution ideal for temporary setups, early production, and rapid deployment with pressure/temperature limits. 5. Stainless Steel (SS 316L): Effective chemical resistance for low-temperature service, but limited by yield strength, chloride stress cracking, and pitting. 6. Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS 2205): High strength and superior cracking resistance, offset by tight welding controls, shielding gas requirements, and high fabrication costs. 7. Nickel Alloy 825: High-tier corrosion and pitting resistance, primarily applied as cladding/tubular liners inside carbon steel backing pipes. 8. Nickel Alloy 625: Premium CRA performance used extensively for internal weld overlay, field weld completions, and critical station piping spools.
