The Stanford-Binet V (SB5) is a traditional IQ test measuring five cognitive abilities in both verbal and nonverbal formats, creating 10 total subtests. Administered one-on-one by psychologists, typically for ages 4-5 but can test children as young as 2. Takes 45-90 minutes and is used for gifted program admission, with scores 146-159 considered "highly gifted" and 131-145 "moderately gifted." Test Structure and Format The Stanford-Binet assesses intelligence quotient by skipping around through different question types instead of grouping them by subtest, making it particularly challenging for young children. This mixed format approach aims to best assess each child's unique cognitive abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Composite FSIQ scores are derived from all 10 subtest scores normed against national averages. Five Cognitive Abilities Measured Each ability is tested in both verbal and nonverbal formats: 1. Fluid Reasoning: Ability to think logically, solve problems, and identify patterns in new situations without relying on prior knowledge. Tasks require identifying relationships, completing sequences, and analyzing patterns. 2. Knowledge: Accumulated information and learned skills from education and experience. Assesses general understanding of language, mathematics, science, and social studies through fact recall and concept application. 3. Quantitative Reasoning: Comprehension of numerical concepts, mathematical operations, and problem-solving with numbers. Includes number sequences, calculations, and mathematical problem-solving tasks. 4. Visual-Spatial Processing: Ability to perceive, analyze, and manipulate visual and spatial information. Tasks involve geometric shapes, spatial object manipulation, and three-dimensional visualization. 5. Working Memory: Capacity to temporarily store, manipulate, and process information. Requires remembering sequences, performing mental calculations, and following multi-step instructions. Test Administration Challenges For many children, the Stanford-Binet represents their first testing experience. The mixed question format can be confusing since psychologists skip between different subtests rather than grouping similar questions. Common preparation needs include basic test-taking skills, understanding directional terms (above, below, sequence, table), learning to sit still for extended periods, and thinking through questions before responding. IQ Score Interpretation and Applications Score ranges include 146-159 (highly gifted), 131-145 (moderately gifted), 116-130 (high average), and 85-115 (average). Single-point differences can significantly impact gifted program admission. The test serves multiple purposes: identifying gifted students, evaluating school readiness, diagnosing learning disabilities, educational planning, and private school admissions.
