Very dry body? Joints that crack? Pain somewhere in the body that never leaves, weak bones, poor sleep, restlessness and stress? Trembling hands and feet, leg cramps, a nerve that suddenly knots up, a heartbeat that races or goes too slow, migraine, headache? In Ayurveda all of these come from vata dosh. Vata is the main dosha: it moves everything in the body, from blood circulation and signals between brain and organs to hormones, digestive enzymes and waste. When vata is balanced it nourishes you. When it is disturbed it upsets pitta and kapha too. In this video: the 12 symptoms of vata, and 8 home remedies to calm it.
The 8 remedies:
1. Lasan ksheerpak (garlic milk, from the Charak Samhita): crush 1–2 cloves of raw garlic and boil them well in water. Add as much milk as you took water and boil until half the water has dried up. Use low-fat milk, or full-fat milk if you feel very weak. Add mishri or shakkar, but no sweetener if you have diabetes. For bloating, constipation, joint pain, cracking joints and stiffness. Take it when you are hungry, not right after a meal.
2. Gur, til and ajwain: melt 100 g gur with 1 spoon of desi ghee, 1 small spoon of ajwain (carom seeds) and 1 small spoon of til (sesame). Take 1 small spoon after a meal, up to twice a day, or roll it into goli and take 1–2 after food. For bloating after meals, constipation and poor appetite, in winter.
3. Fruits: instead of drying fruits and dry fruits, choose phalsa, anjeer (fig), daakh (raisins), khajoor (dates) and dried aloo bukhara (plums). Soaked, or as they are in winter.
4. The sweet, sour and salty tastes: sour alone can trouble you, so always add kala namak (black salt) and something sweet (gur, mishri or shakkar). Nimbu pani made this way, a squeeze of lemon in dal if dal gives you bloating, sweet amla chutney or amla murabba, sweet lemon pickle with food. These sweet versions are not for people with diabetes.
5. Oil massage: til oil in winter, with a little arandi (castor) oil mixed in. If you can't get til oil, use lukewarm mustard oil.
6. Sek (warm compress) after the massage: never massage in a cold place or go out into the cold after it. 10 kinds: a hot water bottle, an electric heat pad, an oiled arandi leaf warmed on the tava and tied on, a hot strip or cloth, a potli of hot sendha namak (rock salt), a potli of hot sand, a hot brick wrapped in thick cloth, 30–45 minutes of sun, a warm lep of pain-relieving leaves (aak, moringa, arandi) with a little haldi, and a warm half-cooked oiled roti with those leaves kneaded in, tied on the painful spot.
7. Stop vata from forming: vata forms from dry, stale or cold food and from weak agni (digestive fire). Cook with mustard oil or desi ghee. 1–1.5 hours after food, gently massage the belly clockwise, starting on the right and ending low on the left, then keep a heat pad or hot water bottle on it.
8. Nidan parivarjan (remove the cause): late nights, too much travel, worry, overthinking, stress, dry food and rushing all raise vata. Slow down and meditate; it calms the nervous system.
