Can renewable energy run a mining operation day and night?
Fortescue’s green grid is a network of solar farms, wind turbines, batteries and transmission lines designed to power our operations without fossil fuels.
In Episode 2 of Decarbonisation Decoded, we go behind the scenes to find out. The planned system includes around 1.5GW of solar, 900MW of wind, 5GWh of battery storage and more than 600km of 220kV transmission lines across the Pilbara. Parts are already operating and more are under construction.
Generating renewable electricity is only part of the challenge. We explore how battery storage, Elysia battery intelligence and an AI-enabled energy management system will work together to balance supply and demand as we prepare to power hundreds of electric machines around the clock.
Bringing it all together means changing how we run our mines, reducing our exposure to volatile fuel prices and taking greater control of our energy supply. It is how our teams are moving us towards Real Zero by 2030.
