Prism has a reputation for making opticians' and doctors' brains hurt, but at its core it's simple: a prism bends light, and that's exactly what makes it so useful in eyeglasses. In this video, we cover the fundamentals: refraction versus reflection, how prism and lens power are directly linked through Prentice's Rule, and the anatomy of a prism (the apex and the base) along with what base in, base out, base up and base down actually mean on a prescription. We'll also get into why vertical misalignment causes more trouble than horizontal, what yoked prism is used for in neuro-optometry, and when splitting prism between both lenses makes a pair of glasses more comfortable to wear.
