[4K] Pingjiang Road in Suzhou, China — a canal-side lane locals sum up in one line: "one Pingjiang Road, half of Gusu city." Stone paving underfoot, the Pingjiang River alongside, teahouses and noodle shops strung along the way. I came up from Shanghai for the day: 20-odd minutes by high-speed train, faster than plenty of commutes from Pudong to Puxi. In the morning I visited the Suzhou Museum; in the afternoon, this. Along the way: girls in hanfu posing for photo shoots (Fujian has its Nyonya kebaya, Xi'an its Warring States robes — every tourist town has its costume); a bowl of Suzhou-style noodles at Yumiantang; an 800-year-old street layout laid down in the Southern Song; a World Heritage stele marking the Grand Canal; and, at the end, the side alleys where the crowds vanish and it goes quiet all at once. One thread runs through it: the Wusong River flows east from Suzhou into Shanghai and becomes the Suzhou Creek — and before Shanghai opened as a treaty port, it was Suzhou that was the far bigger city. Today's Shanghai, in a sense, is what Suzhou used to be.
