In 1960, the Guy Wulfrunian was praised as one of Britain's most advanced double-decker buses. It had air suspension on every wheel, disc brakes, a low floor, and a front entrance designed to solve one of Britain's most frustrating transport problems: low railway bridges. Yet only 137 were ever built. Most operators bought very few, mechanical problems damaged its reputation, and its main customer, West Riding, eventually began withdrawing the buses early. Today, just two complete Guy Wulfrunians survive. So what went wrong? In this episode of The Hidden History, we investigate the rise and fall of the Guy Wulfrunian, from its ambitious development by Guy Motors of Wolverhampton and West Riding Automobile Company in Wakefield to its troubled years in service. We explore the engineering innovations that made the Wulfrunian so unusual, the suspension failures and expensive maintenance that plagued it, and the financial crisis that left its manufacturer struggling to develop the bus when it needed further improvements. We also examine the Wulfrunian's possible influence on later British bus designs and the enthusiasts who worked to preserve the few examples that remained. Was the Wulfrunian simply too advanced for its own good? Or was it a promising design that needed more time, money, and development than its maker could afford? The surviving evidence tells a more complicated story than the legend of a failed experiment.
