Historic Winton 2026 – My First Race in a 1929 Chrysler Special

Can a Home Built Vintage Car Survive Australia's "Goodwood"? When I built my Packard-powered 1929 Chrysler Speedster, my grand plans involved casual weekend cruising—not competitive motorsport. But when the Austin 7 Club invited the car to attend Historic Winton (and even featured it in the official event program!), I decided it was time to drop the polish cloth and see what it could do on the track. My last time on a racing circuit was a demolition derby 45 years ago, so stepping out onto Winton Motor Raceway was a massive learning curve. To even pass AASA safety scrutiny, I had to rapidly fabricate and track down a few essentials: tow hooks, lock-wired plugs, a tailshaft hoop, and a fire extinguisher. Day one threw us an absolute curveball with a mixed practice session that made the Speedster feel like it was moving backward, followed by a major mechanical failure that left us dead in the water.
