On May 10, 2023, an officer with the Cocoa Beach Police Department in Florida stopped a car for an expired registration. The driver said she had no license on her, claimed she had just been robbed, and gave a name and date of birth.
Minutes later, the officer said the name did not check out. A second name failed too, and a routine stop ended in handcuffs, a towed car, and a struggle during fingerprinting. Was the extended stop lawful? And when does a nervous lie become a crime?
This video provides legal analysis of body camera footage from May 10, 2023, in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
