BRAND NEW! Santa Clara 2026 Gillig Low Floor Plus HEV 40' #5402 on Route 40 to Foothill College

A new bus series for VTA has made its debut! The 5400 series, which are 2026 Gillig Hybrid models, are being introduced along with soon-arriving Gillig EVs to retire the remaining diesel fleet and partially replace the oldest hybrid buses running since 2010. These are very similar to the 3400s, but there are a few notable differences: sealed and non-tinted windows, lack of stop request buttons, and, interestingly, a verbal warning when the bus is turning. No other models in the fleet feature that warning. So far, I think these buses are great, and I'm kinda glad they removed those weird bulky-style stop request buttons. They were extremely hard to press just to register the stop request.
