If you know your singles and doubles, you already understand the basic building blocks of many drum rudiments. But knowing the sticking is only half of the equation. To really control a rudiment, you also need to understand strokes, stick movement, dynamics, and how each note prepares you for the next one.
In this video, we take the single paradiddle and look at it from a different perspective. Instead of thinking only about which hand plays each note, we look at how the sticks move, how accents change the required strokes, and how the different paradiddle inversions can give you more options when playing around the drum kit.
You'll also learn an exercise that moves an accent through the entire 16th-note grid while using different paradiddle inversions. We then apply the exercise with left-hand lead, bass drum, and tom accents to show how these ideas can become practical drumming tools rather than just exercises.
If you've ever practiced rudiments but felt like you could play the sticking without really feeling in control of the pattern, this approach can help you understand what you're actually developing.
