That loud BOOM and blue flash on a stormy night? There's a good chance the transformer didn't explode. Here's what really happens inside the gray can on your power pole.

⚡ QUICK ANSWER: Why do power pole transformers explode?

A pole transformer is a steel tank full of oil, copper coils and an iron core. When insulation fails inside, electricity arcs. An arc can reach about 35,000°F, nearly four times the heat of the sun's surface. The heat breaks the oil down into gas within tens of milliseconds, the surrounding oil can't make room fast enough, and pressure climbs until the tank can rupture.
Most of the time a fuse above the can (a "cutout") cuts the power first. That pop and flash is often the fuse doing its job, not the transformer blowing up.
