Why Did Jesus Put His Fingers in a Deaf Man’s Ears?
The people ask Jesus to lay a hand on the man, but Jesus first takes him away from the crowd. What follows in Mark 7:31–37 is an unusually physical encounter: fingers in the ears, spitting, a touch to the tongue, a look toward heaven, and a sigh. Only then comes “Ephphatha”—“Be opened.” Why does Mark preserve this sequence when a simple command might seem enough? These details invite us to look beyond the public excitement and notice the person Jesus meets.
This Bible study follows the healing of a deaf man with a speech impediment in the Decapolis. It explores how Jesus’ gestures may have communicated care and intention to someone who could not hear his words. Mark records the actions without explaining every motive, so we distinguish what the passage says from what a careful reading may suggest. The point is not to invent a secret ritual, but to pay attention to the encounter Mark actually describes.
📖 What You'll Discover in This Study:
Why Jesus takes the man aside privately, and how this changes the focus from a crowd’s request to a personal encounter. Explore the reading that his gestures offer reassurance through touch before hearing is restored.
What to make of the fingers, saliva, upward gaze, and sigh. Ancient beliefs about saliva provide context, while Jesus’ actions raise questions about compassion, prayer, and the way this healing unfolds.
What “Ephphatha” means, and why Mark’s preservation of the Aramaic word stands out. We also examine the Greek description of the man’s speech difficulty and its striking connection with Isaiah 35:5–6.
How the healing in a largely Gentile region connects with Isaiah’s promise of restoration—and why Jesus’ command to tell no one creates tension with the crowd’s growing proclamation that he does all things well.
✨ Why This Matters:
The physical details help us notice Jesus’ attention to a person, not only the miracle’s outcome.
The connection with Isaiah places this encounter within Scripture’s larger promise of restoration.
The crowd’s response invites us to consider what Jesus’ works reveal about his identity.
Mark tells us that the man’s ears opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. He does not tell us how long the man had been deaf or identify the first sound he heard. Keeping those limits in view makes the account no less powerful. Its recorded details already give us much to consider: private attention, embodied compassion, an authoritative command, and a restored ability to hear and speak.
