Your ultrasound technologist keeps asking you to hold still, hold your breath, and stay quiet, and nobody has told you why. Here is the actual reason, and it is not about manners.

The direct answer. An ultrasound picture is live. It exists only while the probe is held in exactly the right spot, at the right angle, at the right depth. Move, and the view is gone. Breathe, and your organs shift by up to several centimetres. Talk, and your chest and abdomen move continuously. Every instruction you are given exists because it decides whether the images are good enough to answer your doctor’s question.
What the exam does. An ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves rather than radiation to make pictures of the inside of your body. FDA states that ultrasound imaging is based on non-ionizing radiation, so it does not carry the same risks as X-rays. Because the images are captured in real time, ultrasound can show organs moving and blood flowing, which a still picture cannot.
What it can and cannot establish. Ultrasound gives a clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on X-ray, and it guides procedures safely because it is live. It cannot see through gas or bone, and larger body size weakens the sound waves as they travel deeper. A normal result applies to the area that was examined and to the question that was asked, not to your whole body. A physician interprets the images and writes the report, so the exam produces findings rather than a diagnosis.
What you will learn in this video. The three biggest concerns, and how RadVeritas education can reduce them. One, not knowing why the instructions exist, which we reduce by showing the live image disappearing when the probe shifts and organs moving with each breath. Two, not knowing when it is right to speak up, which we reduce by naming exactly what always warrants speaking: pain, needing to move, feeling faint or unwell, not understanding an instruction, and needing an interpreter. Three, misreading your sonographer’s silence as bad news, which we reduce by showing that a quiet sonographer is navigating, measuring, and listening, and that results come from a physician who reads the saved images later.
Who makes the decisions? Your own care team orders the right exam, interprets the images, and makes the diagnosis. Follow the preparation and the instructions your own department gives you, because they know why your exam was ordered. This video is educational and is not individual medical advice.
