This is a sea shanty inspired by the Savage Time adventure path from D&D's old Dungeon Magazines. Can your party survive Journey's End?
Lyrics created by me with a little help from ChatGPT for some rhymes and the Heave ho's at the beginning and the end. Song generated by Suno.
[Lyrics]
Heave... ho...
Heave... ho...
The fog rolls in, the cold winds moan,
The green sea calls to claim her own.
On the night the fog did creep,
As you lay adrift in sleep,
On the morrow you woke to find,
You've sailed into a nasty bind!
No struggle you make will save you now,
As the sea of green climbs up our bough,
It strangles the rudder, it coils the mast,
Wood groans above the sea so vast!
Vines that bind! Vines that choke!
Vines that grow to forge your yoke!
Pull the sails down, let the tide rise,
There'll be no salvation beneath these skies!
To the dark heart, let your knee bend,
For you have reached your journey's end!
The Mother lies at the sea's dark heart,
Sending her children to tear you apart,
She dreams in trenches where cold currents moan,
And feeds on the wreckage of ships overthrown!
She drinks of the iron that bleeds from the hull,
She fattens on terror, she sups from your skull,
Captains and cabin boys, merchants and thieves,
Entombed in her garden of rotting sea leaves!
Vines that bind! Vines that choke!
Vines that grow to forge your yoke!
Pull the sails down, let the tide rise,
There'll be no salvation beneath these skies!
To the dark heart, let your knee bend,
For you have reached your journey's end!
When the last light has drowned and the red sun has fled,
The weed grows still as the newly dead,
The water grows black and the hull gives a groan,
And you hear something 'neath the keel like a bone.
They climb o'er the gunwales, they crawl through the hold,
Their fingers like anchors, their touch dark and cold,
They seize up the sailors and haul them from sight,
And the sea swallows all ere the dawn's breaking light!
Vines that bind! Vines that choke!
Vines that grow to forge your yoke!
Pull the sails down, let the tide rise,
There'll be no salvation beneath these skies!
To the dark heart, let your knee bend,
For you have reached your journey's end!
Heave no more, lads, your strength is spent,
The sea has claimed what the sea had lent,
Sing low, sing slow, let the death bells toll,
The green claims the flesh, and the Mother your soul.
So drink to the dead and drink to the lost,
Drink to the dead! Drink to the lost!
To the men who had sailed, and paid the cost,
Paid the cost! Paid the cost!
For the sea keeps her secrets, the sea keeps her men,
And the green will be waiting when you sail again!
No wind fills the canvas, no star shows the way,
No god hears the helpless who kneel down to pray,
And the harder you struggle, the tighter she rends,
For the green has no beginning, the green has no end!
VINES THAT BIND! VINES THAT CHOKE!
VINES THAT GROW TO FORGE YOUR YOKE!
PULL THE SAILS DOWN, LET THE TIDE RISE!
THERE'LL BE NO SALVATION BENEATH THESE SKIES!
TO THE DARK HEART, LET YOUR KNEE BEND!
FOR YOU HAVE REACHED YOUR JOURNEY'S END!
For the Mother is stirring...
Her children ascend...
And the sea has no shores...
At your journey's end...
Heave... ho...
Heave... ho...
The green has no end...
