Hidden near Crwbin in Carmarthenshire, Capel Dyddgen is a ruined medieval chapel thought to date back to the 1200s. In this Welsh history vlog, I explore this historic site near Carmarthen and look into the story behind its crumbling walls, surviving tower and nearby limestone quarry. Also known as Capel Llyddgen or Capel Hyddgen, this small chapel once served the surrounding countryside as part of Llandyfaelog parish. Its recorded history includes a grant to New College, Leicester, in 1355–56, but by 1742 it was described as a ruin. What did Capel Dyddgen originally look like? Who worshipped here? And what do we know about the old quarry and small buildings nearby? I look at the chapel’s medieval history, the nave where people gathered, the chancel containing the altar and the tower that once had battlements. There are still unanswered questions, including exactly why the chapel was abandoned and how the nearby cottages fitted into the area’s quarrying history. If you enjoy Carmarthenshire history, medieval churches, Welsh ruins and discovering lesser-known places in Wales, join me as I explore more of the history on our doorstep. Do you know anything about Capel Dyddgen, the quarry or the families who lived nearby? Share your memories and local knowledge in the comments.
