The Castellows - Bob White, Slane Castle, Ireland

The Castellows always treat us fans with new music, playing unreleased tracks before the official releases, and I think sometimes before even recording them in the studio. Bob White is one of those newer tracks we got to hear live at their shows. What a fun one :) I first heard this in Section, Alabama    • The Castellows - Bob White (unreleased), S...   and then the next day in Walhalla, South Carolina    • The Castellows - Bob White (unreleased), W...   - the ladies played a bit of this (with Gibson the cat looking on) on their Instagram. Now I thought Bob White was a fella, but nope, I learned bobwhite is a bird! Google dose not lie: "The northern bobwhite is a small, round ground-dwelling bird known for its distinct whistling call, social coveys, and mottled camouflage plumage. It belongs to the New World quail family and is native to North and Central America." I also learned from my friend Mr. Google that "Yes, you do hunt them in Georgia, where they have a long cultural tradition and are designated as the official state gamebird." - I wonder if ‪@thecastellows‬ regularly hunt these birds? The Balkcom sisters do sing a fair bit about hunting. With lyrics like "daddy's cleaning shotguns right there on the front porch" in Heartland, and "(Born With A) Shotgun In My Hand" is about their love of hunting. In the introduction to that song at the Revelree Music Festival in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada Lily wondered if deer hunting was controversial in Canada and what we do for fun. At other shows she said they get a lot of hate on the internet for promoting hunting. I guess that is just city-folk not connecting with it. ICYMI this was the shotgun song in Sarnia:    • The Castellows Born With A Shotgun In My H...   The lyrics go like this "I know everybody ain't like me, we all growed up different, that's how it's supposed to be. Some were raised in more concrete than land, but I was born with a shotgun in my hand." But back to Bob White .. or Colinus virginianus, also called the Northern Bobwhite quail. Mr. Google says "Hunters use shotguns (commonly 20-gauge or 12-gauge) loaded with No. 7.5, 8, or 9 shot to hunt them." Fun Fact : I made a custom "Castellowcaster" decaled guitar with shotgun shells for tone and volume knobs and a wildflower decal. It's a blue Tele (a Fender Squire). The shuffle dancing in this performance is so sweet. Just like in the Alabama and South Carolina shows (links above). Ellie, Lily and Powell all get out on the "X" catwalk to dance around the crowd at 3:00 And whistling too :) What is happier than that? Want to know what the real bobwhite sounds like?
