Saint Clare of Assisi — The Lady of San Damiano | A Special Edition Description: She was born into one of the noble houses of Assisi, with fine clothes and a fine future waiting. On the night of Palm Sunday, 1212, Clare slipped out of her father's house, walked through the dark fields to the little chapel of the Portiuncula, and gave God everything. Francis cut off her long hair, and she traded her rich gown for a rough habit. This Special Edition tells her whole story, from the root to the fruit. San Damiano, the poor little church Francis had repaired, became her home for more than forty years. There she founded the Order of Poor Ladies, the Poor Clares, and guarded one treasure all her life: the Privilege of Poverty, the freedom to own nothing at all and to live on what God sends each day. She wrote her sisters' Rule herself, the first rule of religious life ever written by a woman for women, and waited almost forty years for its approval. It came two days before her death, sealed by Pope Innocent IV on August 9, 1253. She died on August 11, 1253, and Pope Alexander IV declared her a saint on September 26, 1255. Her feast day is August 11. In this film you will hear the night in 1240 when soldiers climbed the walls of San Damiano and a sick woman defended her house with prayer and the Blessed Sacrament, told as the early witnesses tell it; and the Christmas night of 1252 when, too ill to rise, she saw and heard the whole Mass from her bed, the night behind her patronage of television, given by Pope Pius XII in 1958. Her sisters still keep her poverty in cloisters around the world; they first came to America in 1875, and her daughters pray behind American cloister walls to this day.
