ABOUT THE BUILDER: Edgar Mönch (1907–1977) has one of the most remarkable biographies in the history of guitar making. Born in Leipzig into a musical family — his mother a Russian pianist, his father a violinist and kapellmeister — he spent his childhood in Russia, studied mechanical engineering in Danzig, and worked as a technical interpreter at the Škoda works in Prague, where he also studied violin at the conservatory. It was during World War II, as a German prisoner of war in an English camp, that he first encountered guitar making — taught by a violin maker from Breslau whom he met among fellow prisoners. Released from captivity in 1947, Mönch dedicated himself fully to luthiery, and perfected his knowledge by studying in Spain with his friend and fellow craftsman Marcelo Barbero in Madrid. Mönch has always been regarded as the "other" Munich luthier — the first and best known being Hermann Hauser. The comparison is apt: his instruments share that same clarity, power, and distinctly German sense of architectural precision, with a strong projection and clear tone that makes articulation and accuracy feel effortless. His manual skill and perfectionism brought him global appreciation, and from his workshop came important luthiers including Jean Larrivée, Kolya Panhuyzen, Ken Bowen, and Joseph Kurek. Segovia, Julian Bream, John Williams, and Vicente Gómez were among the many distinguished players who played his instruments. Julian Bream recorded his second RCA album on a 1959 Mönch, and Segovia kept one for his daily practice. The 1963 guitar heard here was built during the final years of Mönch's Munich period — he moved from Munich to Toronto, Canada in 1965 — making it among the last instruments from what collectors consider the most prized epoch of his work. These late Munich guitars are exceedingly rare and represent the full maturity of his craft before the move that would define the second chapter of his career. The program ranges across four centuries of repertoire, performing excerpts of works by Sor, Bach, Tarrega, and Villa Lobos. Guitar sounds great in all the various genres.
