I spent 24 hours inside the Santa Ana Riverbed — exploring an area most people drive past without ever seeing what’s actually down there.
The Santa Ana River cuts through Southern California for nearly 100 miles, but some stretches have developed a very different reputation once you leave the maintained trails and surrounding neighborhoods behind.
In this video, I head into the riverbed to experience it for myself — from daylight into the night — and see what 24 hours in this environment is really like.
This isn’t about sensationalizing the people who live or spend time along the river. It’s about exploring a side of Southern California that exists largely out of sight and documenting what I actually encounter.
00:00 - Introduction: The "New Year's Tragedy" and the 96-mile journey begins.
01:10 - Starting the hike in Riverside with a 100° heat index.
02:35 - Contaminated waters and the 1938 "Great Flood" history.
03:22 - Flashback: A previous dangerous encounter with a resident.
04:40 - Explaining the "sewer water" runoff and chemical contamination.
07:40 - Stumbling upon "chop shops" and stolen bike graveyards.
10:45 - Exploring unique "bushcraft" shelters and floating bridges.
13:54 - Finding a clean, active camp and respecting privacy.
15:35 - Brief interactions with people living along the river.
19:55 - Arriving at the "safer" Eastvale portion of the river.
22:45 - Discussing the reality of crime vs. the beauty of the trails.
25:10 - Catching a fish at a "secret pond."
26:00 - Setting up the one-man tent for the night.
27:10 - Night hike: Hearing the wildlife and avoiding mosquitoes.
31:00 - Final reflections on the "duality" of the Santa Ana River.
