A thousand years ago, in Basra, a secret circle of thinkers wrote one of the largest encyclopedias the medieval world had ever seen — 52 epistles on mathematics, astronomy, nature, the soul and theology. And not one of them signed his name.
Who were the Ikhwan al-Safa, the Brethren of Purity? Why did they meet in secret? And why does their way of organising all knowledge still shape how we learn today? From the harmony of numbers and music, to the famous fable in which the animals take humanity to court, this is the untold story of Islam's most mysterious scholars.
What do you think — was hiding their names wisdom, or a great loss to history? Tell us in the comments.
