In 1958, Britain told the world it had tamed the Sun. It hadn't. But over the next seventy years, British scientists at Harwell and Culham wrote the recipe for fusion, carried a laser into Cold War Moscow to prove the tokamak worked, and built JET, the machine that set the world record for fusion energy. Now, on the site of a demolished coal power station in Nottinghamshire, Britain is planning one of the first fusion power plants in the world. From ZETA and the Lawson criterion to the Culham team in Moscow, JET's 1991 first and its final 69 megajoule record, Tokamak Energy's spherical ST40 and the STEP prototype plant at West Burton: six British breakthroughs, the honest limits, and the one number that explains why fusion matters so much. Brenda Marsh and her grandson Kieran are fictional, dramatised characters. Facts and figures are as published by the UK Atomic Energy Authority, EUROfusion, UK Industrial Fusion Solutions / UK Fusion Energy (STEP), Bassetlaw District Council, Kier, Tokamak Energy, ITER, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and reputable press reports up to October 2026. Timelines for STEP are targets, not guarantees. Some images are AI generated illustrations.
